The Ultimate Bra Sizing Guide: How to Find Your Real Size

The Uncomfortable Truth

Here's a stat that gets thrown around a lot: 80% of women wear the wrong bra size. After years of working with lingerie brands and fitting experts, we believe it. And the reason is simple — bra sizing is confusing, inconsistent, and most people learned to do it wrong.

This guide will fix that.

Why Your Current Size Might Be Wrong

The Most Common Mistakes

  1. Band too loose, cup too small — This is the #1 fitting error. Women go up in band size for "comfort" and down in cup size to compensate. The result: the band rides up, straps dig in, and the cups overflow.

  2. Measured once, never again — Your body changes. Weight fluctuations, hormones, age, pregnancy, and even exercise can shift your bra size. You should re-measure at least once a year.

  3. Trusting the label — A 34C at Victoria's Secret is NOT the same as a 34C at CUUP or Freya. Every brand fits differently.

How to Measure: The Correct Way

You'll need a soft measuring tape. Wear an unlined bra or no bra.

Step 1: Band Size (Under-Bust)

Wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage, directly under your breasts. The tape should be:

  • Level all the way around
  • Snug but not tight (you should be able to fit one finger underneath)
  • Measured on an exhale

Your number: Round to the nearest whole number. If it's even, that's your band size. If it's odd, try both the number above and below (e.g., 33" → try both 32 and 34 bands).

Step 2: Bust Size (Fullest Point)

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust. The tape should be:

  • Level all the way around
  • Resting gently (not compressing)
  • Measured standing straight

Your number: Round to the nearest whole number.

Step 3: Cup Size (The Math)

Subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement:

DifferenceCup Size
0"AA
1"A
2"B
3"C
4"D
5"DD/E
6"DDD/F
7"G
8"H

Example: Band = 32", Bust = 36" → Difference = 4" → 32D

Sister Sizes: Your Secret Weapon

Sister sizing is the concept that cup volume stays the same when you go up a band size and down a cup size (or vice versa).

Your SizeSister Size (Looser Band)Sister Size (Tighter Band)
32D34C30DD
34C36B32D
36B38A34C
34DD36D32DDD

When to use sister sizes:

  • A brand's 34 band feels too tight → try 36 with one cup size down
  • A brand's 34 band feels too loose → try 32 with one cup size up

The Fit Test: 5 Checks

Put on a bra and check these five things:

1. The Band

  • Should sit level and parallel to the floor
  • Should feel snug on the loosest hook (new bras stretch over time)
  • Should NOT ride up in the back

2. The Cups

  • Should contain all breast tissue (no spillage over, under, or at the sides)
  • Should not wrinkle or gap
  • The center gore (bridge between cups) should sit flat against your chest

3. The Straps

  • Should stay in place without digging in
  • Should carry about 10% of the support (the band does 90%)
  • You should be able to fit two fingers underneath

4. The Underwire

  • Should follow the natural curve of your breast
  • Should sit on your ribcage, not on breast tissue
  • Should not poke or dig anywhere

5. The Overall Feel

  • You should be able to raise your arms without the bra shifting
  • You should be able to breathe comfortably
  • You should forget you're wearing it after a few minutes

Size Conversion Between Brands

Sizes are NOT universal. Here's a rough guide:

US SizeUK SizeEU SizeFR Size

34C34C75C90C
36D36D80D95D
34DD34DD75E90E
38DDD38E85F100F

Pro tip: Always check the brand's specific size chart. A CUUP 34C fits differently than a Victoria's Secret 34C.

When Numbers Don't Work

Sometimes measurements give you a starting point, but the "right" size is the one that passes the fit test above. Bodies aren't standard shapes, and bras aren't either.

If you're between sizes:

  • Prefer support? Go with the tighter band + larger cup
  • Prefer comfort? Go with the looser band + smaller cup
  • Shallow shape? Try demi cups or bralettes
  • Projected shape? Try full cups or plunge styles

Our Recommendation

  1. Measure yourself using the method above
  2. Take our quiz — we factor in body shape, not just numbers
  3. Try 2-3 sizes in any new brand (most offer free returns)
  4. Re-measure yearly — your body, your size, your confidence
