Your Bra Deserves Better
Let's be honest — most of us have ruined at least one good bra in the washing machine. The underwire pokes through, the cups get warped, the elastic goes limp after three months. And then we blame the bra.
But here's the thing: the bra wasn't the problem. The wash routine was.
A quality bra should last 6-12 months of regular wear if you treat it right. Some of mine have lasted two years. The secret isn't magic — it's just knowing what actually damages them and what doesn't.
How Often Should You Wash Your Bras?
This is the question everyone asks and nobody agrees on. Here's my honest answer:
Every 3-5 wears, assuming you're not doing heavy exercise or sweating significantly. If you're in a hot climate, work out in your bra, or wear it during a particularly long day, wash it sooner.
The "never wash it" crowd and the "wash after every wear" crowd are both wrong. Too little washing lets body oils and bacteria break down the elastic. Too much washing puts unnecessary stress on the fabric and construction.
Rotate your bras. If you have 3-4 everyday bras in rotation, each one gets a rest day between wears. This lets the elastic recover its shape and extends the life of every bra you own.
Hand Washing: The Gold Standard
Yes, hand washing is the best method. No, it doesn't take as long as you think.
The Method
- Fill a basin or clean sink with cool to lukewarm water (never hot — heat destroys elastic)
- Add a small amount of gentle detergent — lingerie wash, baby shampoo, or gentle laundry detergent. A tablespoon is plenty.
- Submerge your bras and gently swish them around. Let them soak for 15-30 minutes.
- Gently massage any areas with visible dirt or deodorant buildup. Pay attention to the underband and the underarm area of cups.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water until no soap remains.
- Press out excess water — lay the bra flat on a clean towel, fold the towel over, and gently press. Never wring or twist.
Total active time: about 5 minutes. The rest is just soaking.
Machine Washing: The Real Truth
Can you machine wash bras? Yes, but with conditions. I know not everyone has time for hand washing, and a carefully machine-washed bra is better than a never-washed one.
How to Machine Wash Safely
- Use a mesh lingerie bag — this is non-negotiable. It prevents straps from tangling around the agitator and protects cups from getting crushed.
- Hook the bra closed before putting it in the bag. Open hooks snag on everything.
- Use the delicate/gentle cycle with cold water.
- Use a small amount of gentle detergent. Skip fabric softener — it coats elastic fibers and makes them break down faster.
- Wash with similar items — other delicates, not jeans and towels.
Never, Ever Do This
- Hot water — breaks down elastic and can warp molded cups
- Regular cycle — too aggressive, stretches bands and straps
- Fabric softener — coats and weakens elastic fibers
- Bleach — even on white bras, it degrades fabric
- Overloading the bag — one or two bras per bag maximum
Drying: Where Most People Go Wrong
This is the part that ruins more bras than anything else.
The Only Right Way
Air dry. Lay your bras flat on a clean towel or drape them over a drying rack by the center gore (the piece between the cups). Let both cups hang naturally so they keep their shape.
Acceptable Alternatives
- Hang by the center gore on a clothesline or hanger — the cups hang naturally downward
- Lay flat on a towel — especially good for molded/padded cups
What Will Destroy Your Bras
- The dryer — heat warps cups, shrinks bands, and kills elastic. This is the #1 bra killer.
- Hanging by one strap — stretches the strap unevenly
- Draping over a radiator or heater — same heat damage as a dryer
- Leaving them balled up wet — mildew risk and cup warping

Special Cases
Sports Bras
Wash after every workout. They can handle machine washing better than regular bras, but still use a mesh bag and cold water. The moisture-wicking fabric needs regular washing to keep working.
Strapless Bras
Hand wash only. The silicone grip strips that keep them up are the first thing to degrade, and rough washing accelerates that.
Bralettes
Most bralettes are more forgiving than structured bras. Machine wash in a mesh bag on delicate is totally fine. Their lack of underwire and molded cups means less can go wrong.
Adhesive Bras
Rinse with warm water and mild soap after each use. Let them air dry sticky-side up. Don't use towels or tissue on the adhesive — it picks up fibers and loses stickiness.
How to Store Your Bras Properly
Storage matters more than people think:
- Stack molded cups inside each other, nesting them like bowls. Never fold one cup into the other — it creates creases that never come out.
- Lay soft-cup bras flat or fold gently in half.
- Give them space in the drawer. Cramming bras into a packed drawer warps the cups.
- Straps tucked in — keeps them from stretching or snagging on other items.
When Your Bra Is Beyond Saving
Even with perfect care, bras don't last forever. Replace when:
- The band stretches out even on the tightest hook
- Underwire pokes through the fabric
- Cups are permanently wrinkled or misshapen
- Straps won't stay adjusted
- The fabric is pilling, thinning, or discolored
A well-cared-for bra lasts 6-12 months of regular rotation. That's not a failure — that's normal wear. Treat your bras well and they'll return the favor every single day.
