Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday. The US Postal Service's recommended send-by date for Ground Advantage, the cheapest USPS parcel class and a common pick for free-shipping orders, is Thursday, December 17, for delivery in the lower 48 states. That date is when the package needs to leave the warehouse, not when you click "buy". Most brands need one to three business days to pick, pack and hand an order to the carrier, and longer in December. Work backward from that and the real deadline for a standard-shipping lingerie order is closer to December 10.
This guide is built around that calendar. It sorts gifts by price tier, says what the extra money buys in fabric and construction at each level, and covers the checkout details that decide whether the box arrives looking like a present or like a return. If you are still deciding whether lingerie is the right gift at all, or how to give it without it feeling like a gift for you, read how to buy lingerie as a gift first. This one assumes you have decided and need it to arrive on time.
The 2026 Order-By Calendar
These dates come from the USPS 2026 holiday schedule, which the Postal Service publishes as recommendations rather than guarantees. Brand cutoffs are usually earlier, and each brand posts its own on its shipping page from late November on.
- Black Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday, November 30. The year's deepest discounts on sets and sleepwear. We track them in Black Friday lingerie deals 2026. Buying a main gift here also gives you a full month to exchange a size.
- About December 1: brands that ship from Europe. French, Italian and UK labels shipping direct to the US go through customs, and a parcel can sit for days. If the brand does not have a US warehouse, order in the first days of December at the latest.
- About December 10: US brands, standard shipping. This leaves room for warehouse processing ahead of the USPS Ground Advantage date.
- December 17: USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail send-by date for the lower 48. For Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and US territories, Ground Advantage moves up a day to December 16.
- December 18: USPS Priority Mail.
- December 19: USPS Priority Mail Express, the last USPS option. December 19 is a Saturday, so check that your brand ships on weekends before counting on it.
After about December 15, an order with standard shipping is a gamble. Your remaining options are paid express shipping (check the brand's own cutoff for it, which is often a specific hour on a specific day), a department store or brand boutique with in-store pickup, or a digital gift card printed and put in a real box with tissue.
What Each Price Tier Actually Buys
Price in lingerie tracks three things: fiber, how the lace was made, and how much hand finishing the garment got. It also tracks size risk, because the more structured a piece is, the more exactly it has to fit. Small, size-forgiving items under $50 are their own category, covered in lingerie stocking stuffers under $50. The tiers below are for the main gift. Ranges are rough, as of late 2026, and full-price.
$50 to $100: Soft, Forgiving and Wearable
This tier is mostly sleepwear and unstructured pieces, which is good news for gifting, because they are sized S, M and L with generous ease.
- A modal or cotton-modal sleep set. Modal is a soft rayon fiber that drapes and stays cool. Look for flatlock or covered seams on the inside of the shorts, since a raised seam at the hip is what makes cheap sleepwear itchy.
- A lace bralette sized S/M/L. No wire and no molded cup, so a size off is far less noticeable than with a bra. Check that the lace is backed by a soft mesh lining at the cup, or it can scratch.
- A knit or waffle robe. One of the safest gifts in lingerie, because a robe only needs to wrap. Ask for one with interior ties as well as the outer belt, so it stays closed.
$100 to $200: The Matching Set or Washable Silk
Here you get a real bra with a matching bottom, or silk sleepwear that can go in the washing machine.
- A matching bra and brief. The money shows in the details: a band with plush-backed elastic that does not dig, power mesh in the wings rather than plain stretch net, and a center gore that is finished cleanly rather than bound with bulky tape. It is also the riskiest gift on this list for size, so buy it only if you know her exact band and cup, both numbers.
- Washable silk sleepwear. Brands make silk machine washable by pre-washing and treating it, which softens the hand. It will feel less crisp than dry-clean silk, and it will be worn far more often.
- A slip or chemise. Bias-cut pieces, where the fabric is cut diagonally to the grain, cling and stretch slightly. That gives a bias-cut slip more forgiveness in size than a straight-cut one.
$200 to $400: Silk Weight and Leavers Lace
This is where traditional luxury construction starts.
- A silk robe or pajama set. Silk weight is measured in momme. Around 19 momme is a typical sleepwear weight, while 22 momme and up feels denser, drapes heavier and wears longer. Many brands list it in the product details.
- A set made with Leavers lace. Leavers lace is made on slow machines of a 19th-century design, many of them in Calais and Caudry in northern France. It has a fine, three-dimensional net and soft eyelash-fringed edges, often trimmed by hand. Raschel lace, the faster machine-made kind on most everyday sets, is flatter and more uniform. Run your thumb along the edge: Leavers is supple and the motif stands slightly proud of the net, while Raschel feels smooth and even.
- A longline or corset-style top for someone who already wears structured pieces. It looks dramatic in the box, but it has to be sized from her measurements.
$400 and Up: Pay for Fit, Not a Guess
At this price, a gift bought in the wrong size is an expensive return. Two better routes:
- A boutique fitting plus a budget. Book a professional fitting at a lingerie boutique and put the amount in the card. She gets a bra that fits and chooses the piece herself.
- A silk robe from a luxury house. A robe is the one luxury piece that still works without exact sizes, since it only has to wrap and the belt takes up the difference. Check the length against her height: a robe cut for 5'9" can pool on someone who is 5'2".
To narrow down which labels make which kinds of pieces, our brand directory filters by category and price.
Getting It There Gift-Wrapped
"Gift-wrapped" covers several different things at checkout, and brands differ in which ones they offer. Before you pay, check each of these:
- A gift message field. It prints your note on a card in the package. Write it as if a stranger at the warehouse will read it, because one will.
- A gift receipt or price-free packing slip. Without one, the invoice with prices is often the first thing she sees when she opens the box.
- Gift box or wrap. Some brands offer it free, some charge a fee, and some only in December.
- The outer mailer. Even wrapped, the shipping box usually carries the brand's logo. If she is likely to open the door to it, ship it to yourself instead.
- The return window. Many brands extend returns over the holidays so a December gift can be exchanged in January, but check the exact date. Also check the rules for bottoms: some brands accept panties only unworn with the hygiene liner in place, and some sell them final sale.
If the brand offers none of these, ship to yourself and wrap it at home. A plain box with tissue paper and a handwritten card looks better than most branded wrap.
Sizing Under a Deadline
There is no time for a second shipment in late December, so lower the size risk on purpose.
- Check a tag on a bra she wears often, not one at the back of the drawer, and write down both numbers, for example 34C rather than "C".
- When you cannot check, choose pieces sized S/M/L or one-size: robes, sleep sets, slips, bralettes.
- Between two sizes, choose the larger in sleepwear and robes, where ease is part of the design. For a bra, do not guess. Buy her a gift card instead.
The style side is easier to get right. If she has taken the Lingerie Alley style quiz, her results already say which occasions and styles she likes, and that is a shorter path than guessing from her closet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it too late to order lingerie for Christmas after December 15?
Not quite, but standard shipping is no longer reliable. Pay for express shipping before the brand's posted cutoff, or buy from a store with in-store pickup. Failing that, put a printed gift card in a real box with tissue, which looks deliberate rather than last-minute.
What is the safest lingerie gift if I do not know her size?
A robe, then a sleep set, then a bralette in S/M/L. Each is designed with ease, so a size off still works. Leave structured bras and corsetry for when you know her measurements.
Should a Christmas lingerie gift be red?
Only if she wears red. Black, ivory, champagne and deep jewel tones such as plum or emerald get worn long after December. A red set bought only for the season usually ends up in the back of a drawer by February.
Can she exchange a lingerie gift in January?
Usually, if the brand's holiday return window covers it and the piece is unworn with tags attached. Bottoms can have stricter hygiene rules or be final sale. Include a gift receipt, so she can exchange it without asking you.
One last tip: write her sizes in your phone's notes as soon as you find them. The tag you check in December is the same one you will need for Valentine's Day.
